Prior to having these three lovely little seedlings, I was a certified credit counselor, supervisor and community educator. I learned a lot from my required financial education training but I learned actually much more from helping others.
I learned that:
Hopefully, the information provided in the Money Garden will at least help with the last item on the list. I am a homeschooling mom and a stay at home mom with information that I feel needs to be shared and practiced by all parents (and many non-parents). There are always differing opinions, and I never suggest striving for "perfection" nor do I claim to have it. However, if we don't set our bar a bit high, how can we expect to achieve something great? I may not be the first to say many of the items here but perhaps I will have a garden fresh spin on how to present it to your entire family. Please explore all the different tools and information I have tried to pull together from my years of educating and parenting.
I learned that:
- Even the most educated can be surprisingly lacking in financial education.
- Our instant gratification society is breeding generations that continue to expand their debt levels to astronomical levels. I was shocked to find out the levels of credit card debt many people maintain.
- The moment a child turns 18, they are now newly legal consumers in the creditor realm and easily become prey and victims to poor practices when not prepared. This debt was still affecting people 20+ years later.
- Talking about money to people is like talking about their weight. They are usually very guarded and sensitive about it, especially when they aren't proud of it. Also, they are often very opposed to make changes that make them feel uncomfortable.
- Finances are leading causes for divorce, depression, and suicide.
- Emphasis on financial education must start at a much younger age.
